We all want to be treated fairly in our judicial system and life. But, we cannot move forward without looking back and acknowledging that the system has not always gotten it right.
In 2021, I established Indiana’s first Conviction Integrity Unit, an independent team within the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office that works diligently to prevent, identify, and remedy wrongful convictions by conducting fact-based reviews of past convictions. Since its inception, the Conviction Integrity Unit has reviewed hundreds of applications and agreed to sentence modifications.
The Conviction Integrity Unit provides an opportunity to hold ourselves accountable as prosecutors to always do the right thing. Sometimes we have to look back to protect our right to fairness and move our community forward.
